Snow and the cold is something this gentleman likes after working for the Atigun Pass, high above the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Shivering with delight, this retired engineer wanted to hear more about the plans of the local university’s alumni group who wanted to get into a cool Antarctica adventure! I began to think that this was simply an excellent idea. Without a doubt, this place known to be the coldest and least hospitable keeps drawing in voyagers, be it the real or armchair sorts.
But recently, less travelers are able to visit this land per year due to many financial hassles, as it is not very easy to get here. Challenging indeed for before one can reach the Antarctic Peninsula, he has to start from Argentina’s southernmost city known as Ushuaia, travel a thousand kilometers for a couple of days through the Drake Passage, grim with the world’s roughest sea weather.
Such experiences are not only profound, but are also life changing. As early as the late 1800s, voyagers have been attracted to this land first sighted in the year 1820. But the first commercial voyages to the region didn’t begin until a few years after the Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1959, establishing the continent as a natural reserve, devoted to peace and science.
But it is only after the collapse of the Iron Curtain in the 1990s that the travel industry soared despite the welcome evolutions. With no funding for scientific programs, Russian ice rated expedition ships suddenly became available, and tour operators, sensing an opportunity, were quick to renovate them for commercial travel. Something breathtaking and new must be seen by visitors who are mostly seasoned travelers of the world. And then there are those who yearn for adventure like the one that Sir Ernest Shackleton came to be known for, having endured his 1914 expedition and surviving it, making his tale one of the greatest survival tales in the expedition world.
Given its spectacular beauty, you cruise among icebergs, and giant glaciers, fill the landscape, the far flung destination also appeals to nature lovers, artists and photographers. Apart from the penguins and seals, here is where you will find whale species from humpback, killer up to the minke variety. The circumpolar north is where the polar bears are so you will not be able to see them here.
The nonexistence of ports and docks led to people relying on zodiac boats which are rubberized and inflatable. Having reached the area, activities like iceberg kayaking, hiking, or simply standing among the penguins await you along with taking loads of photos. Your naturalists from the expedition team should be able to answer anything from the Antarctic marine life, wildlife, history and glaciology of the White Continent.
Eight days of his trip was spent sailing in a 5 star cruise liner while 3 days he was in Buenos Aires, and throughout he was bombarded by information on local wildlife and scenery. Heading to naturalist guided excursions to penguin rookeries was something that truly made his trip memorable. These birds, short legged but curious went bravely to him and wowed him with a number.
But then not all people look forward to exploring the White Continent as much as the others. The common fear of some environmentalists is the damage to the fragile Antarctic ecosystem caused by the tourists growing in number each year, posing harm to breeding of wildlife thus reducing the population. Adopting voluntary standards to lessen tourism’s adverse impacts are the Antarctic tour operators’ international alliance. If all tourists, companies and natural programs would comply with the good operational and conservation practices, the region would remain unblemished.
He shares that it is just sad how television shows nowadays condition humans to view animals including the thousands of penguins that call Antarctica home as entertainment, further compounding the problem, he reveals. If animals are used to people, they won’t be aggravated. And that sort of long term disassociation from the natural world poses a real threat. There is no applause from other conservationists when it comes to this. But he retorts that developing sensitivity for Antarctica is likely to happen if more people go there.
